Why Freeze Dried Foods are great for Hiking

When going camping you will need to take food with you or source it locally.  If you are just trekking recreationally and there are stores nearby then it makes sense to go out and buy meal, either to eat over at the campsite or to eat on-site at a burger joint for example.

But if you are hiking in the wilderness, or are taking your camping seriously (if you’re staying in a camp but eating at Kentucky Fried Chicken then you’re not taking it seriously!) then you need a different way.

If you’re a huntsman or survivalist you may be able to manage from the local wildlife. For most of us, however, the optimal method is to simply take food with you.  Then you know you will have adequate food to consume, and will retain the authenticity of your tenting holiday.

The trouble is that food is in general both bulky and heavy, so if you are carrying everything in a backpack this can prove to be a bit of a problem.

Freeze dried foods, however, are the clear solution to this problem.  During the freeze drying procedure the sizable majority of the moisture is removed from the meal, greatly shrinking the weight and size while retaining most of the flavor and nutritional value.  The foods are then packed in air-tight pouches which can be stored for many years in most cases.

To eat the food you only need to add boiling water and stir for a bit.  This obviously mean that you’ll either want to take adequate water with you (which would be a little impractical in itself due to it’s size and weight) or locate a source of clean water at or near your encampment.  You will also want a portable stove or fire making items in order to boil the water.

Freeze dried meals do not imply that the food has to be a tastless mush. The freeze drying procedure preserves most of the taste and nutritional value of the original meal, and once rehyrated it tastes, smells and looks like it did previously even keeping the same texture. Nor are the meals boring, with plenty of flavorful modern dishes like Spaghetti Bolognaise

Mountain House, is the Top brand of hiking foods, and has been the choice of open-air enthusiasts for more than thirty years. That’s because Mountain House is widely considered as the best tasting freeze dried meals, and are convenient, simple to cook and have a lengthy shelf life of roughly 5 years.
